How to make number tracing worksheets

  1. Choose the numbers 0 to 10, 1 to 10, 1 to 20, 11 to 20 or one single number.
  2. Pick a style and size Dotted, light gray or rainbow numbers in five sizes.
  3. Check the preview Each row begins with a model number with start dots and arrows.
  4. Print Download the PDF or print. 1 to 20 takes about four pages with medium numbers.

Writing numbers is a separate skill

Children often recognise numbers long before they can write them. Writing a numeral needs the same fine-motor control as letters, plus knowing where each number starts. These sheets give every number its own row: a model with a green start dot and arrows, then dotted copies to trace across the line.

Numbers that are often written backwards

Reversing 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9 (and sometimes 4 and 6) is normal for children up to about age 7. It usually fades with practice and doesn't mean anything is wrong. Two things help:

  • Start in the right place. Most reversed numbers start on the wrong side. 2, 3 and 7 start at the top left and move right; 5 starts with the line down, then the round belly, and the flat top is added last.
  • Say the strokes out loud. Short rhymes such as “around and back on the railroad track, 2, 2, 2” for 2, or “down and around, put a hat on top” for 5 give children a script to follow.

Making number practice meaningful

  1. Count real objects, then write the number: five blocks, then trace 5.
  2. Combine with a blank handwriting page for writing the numbers from memory.
  3. For 11 to 20, point out that the second digit counts up the same way as 1 to 9.
  4. Keep sessions short. One page a day is enough for a preschooler.

Which range to start with?

Preschoolers usually start with 1 to 10, often one number at a time. Kindergarten curricula typically expect children to write numbers 0 to 20. If your child already writes 1 to 10 well, move to 11 to 20 to practise two-digit numbers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

At what age can children trace numbers?

Most children can start tracing numbers between ages 3 and 5. Begin with 1 to 5 or a single number in extra large size.

Why does my child write numbers backwards?

Number reversals are common up to about age 7 and usually disappear with practice. Showing where each number starts, as the green dots on these sheets do, helps.

Can I print one number per page?

Yes. Choose “Only 5” (or any number from 0 to 20) to get a full page for that number.

Is there a worksheet for numbers 1 to 20?

Yes. Choose 1 to 20. It prints one number per row over several pages.

Are the number tracing worksheets free?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up and no watermark. Print as many as you like for home or classroom use.
