Printable Coordinate Plane Graph Paper
Ready-made x and y axes on a grid, with numbered ticks and arrows. Print one large plane or up to six small ones per page for homework.
Print at “Actual size” or 100% scale so the spacing comes out exactly as set. Everything is made in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

How to make coordinate plane paper
- Choose quadrants All four quadrants with the origin in the middle, or the first quadrant only.
- Set the range Axes from ±5 up to ±20 (or 0 to 20 for the first quadrant).
- Graphs per page One large plane, or 2, 4 or 6 smaller planes for practice problems.
- Print or download Download the PDF or print it directly.
Parts of the coordinate plane
The horizontal x-axis and vertical y-axis cross at the origin (0, 0) and divide the plane into four quadrants, numbered counterclockwise from the top right:
| Quadrant | x | y | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| I (top right) | + | + | (3, 4) |
| II (top left) | − | + | (−3, 4) |
| III (bottom left) | − | − | (−3, −4) |
| IV (bottom right) | + | − | (3, −4) |
To plot (x, y), start at the origin, move x units along the x-axis (right if positive, left if negative), then y units up or down. A common memory aid: “walk to the elevator, then ride it”.
Which layout for which lesson?
- First quadrant, 0–10: grades 5 and 6, plotting ordered pairs and simple real-world graphs.
- Four quadrants, ±10: grades 6 to 8, negative coordinates, reflections and translations, linear equations.
- Four quadrants, ±20: steeper lines, systems of equations, larger data ranges.
- 4 or 6 planes per page: homework sets where each problem needs its own graph.
For an unlabelled grid without axes, use regular graph paper.
Frequently asked questions
What is a coordinate plane?
A grid with a horizontal x-axis and vertical y-axis crossing at the origin, used to locate points by ordered pairs (x, y).
How are the quadrants numbered?
Counterclockwise starting at the top right: I (+,+), II (−,+), III (−,−), IV (+,−).
Can I print several coordinate planes on one page?
Yes. Choose 2, 4 or 6 under Graphs per page.
Can I print only the first quadrant?
Yes. Choose “First quadrant only” for positive x and y values.
What is the origin on a coordinate plane?
The origin is the point (0, 0) where the x-axis and y-axis cross. It is the centre of a four-quadrant grid.
